The 72nd edition of the Giro di Lombardia was held on October 7, 1978.

Moser and Hinault led the chase group

A long solo breakaway by Roberto Ceruti (Mecap-Selle Italia) was caught by the 8 rider chase group led by Francesco Moser and French champion Bernard Hinault.

A series of attacks kept the speed of the group very high. When the sprint opened up in the final kilometer Moser rode to the front and challenged anyone to come past. Sanson’s Francesco Moser easily controlled the sprint and rolled across the finish line for the 1978 Lombardia victory.
